Iowa and a Uhaul

Oma was nice enough to house (or shed) the bulk of our storage when we made our move from Kansas to Chicago close to 7 years ago. I'm sure by this point she assumed we would never actually come back for the pile of stuff we left behind, but she never said a word. She also didn't complain when we made an impromptu trip back this weekend to load it all up!

After ten hours of driving, a few days at the farm, a quick visit with an amazing friend, a u-haul trailer and a slumber party at the new house our whirlwind weekend was over. Whew!

Moving West

Today was a big day for our little family. We officially closed on our new home!!!

And I don't use that word lightly. Home.

For the past 5 years we have had an open ended conversation surrounding the topic of where we would like to live. It has run the gamet I tell you. Everywhere from Germany, to North Carolina, to Seattle, to Iowa. Oddly enough, Chicago wasn't on the list. Especially strange seeing that amazing things have happened in our 7 years here including being married and welcoming 2 amazing girls into our lives.

So we choose to stay.

We're home.

As soon as we get packed up...

Capitalized because Grace dominates in this new experience.

Just as we had with Charlotte we introduced oatmeal cereal on her six month birthday. She devoured it. In the past week we've moved on to sweet potatoes and avocado, with peas up next. So far so good.
Let the fun begin. Messy faces, beginner signing, and an opportunistic dog lying right below her seat.

Charlotte shared in this first giving Grace her first bite. Grace was skeptical...

Hotel Night

This winter has been long. Part of it was due to being "Graced" with a newborn in September and being cooped up for the four months of maternity leave. Part of it is due to the mountain of snow that has made a permanent residence outside of our apartment. Promising to melt just enough so that new snow can be piled on top without tumbling back down to the sidewalk. I could go on, but seeing that we choose to live in Chicago we give up the right to complain.

Instead, we did something about it. We booked a hotel.
In Chicago, or technically right outside the city.
The only qualifications were that it had a pool, and accepted dogs. Thank you Embassy Suites.

We loaded up the car. Packed our swim suits. And made a stop for some itty bitty swim diapers then headed to our one night get away.

We swam until we were cold and/or our fingers turned into raisins then ordered room service dinner. Last up was a movie with all 4 of us cuddled up on the couch. Brinker at our feet.

Awesome. Pure joy.

Until midnight when I woke up sick as a dog and spent the rest of the night on the bathroom floor. Not awesome.

Even worse - 24 hours later Charlotte came down with the same thing.

So sick of sickness.

Six Months

You, my dear daughter And I love that.
You are feisty, and loud, and squirmy. You are a beast when you are tired and messy when you eat.
I feel blessed to wake up to you each day.
You are funny, and happy, and smiley. Oh Lord are you smiley. It's different with you than it was with Charlotte. Where we had to work hard for every smile we got from her we simply look at you and you light up. Your whole body smiles.
Charlotte, oh how you worship her. Which seems fitting given how much she dotes on you. You put up with her hugs and you listen when she "reads" to you.
You will never want for loves around this house.
It's been a fun six months. I can't believe it's gone this quickly. Here's to the next six going a bit slower.

Movie Recap

Big movie night Saturday. Debut showing of Wizard of Oz at the Haigh house. A whole lot of skipping around singing "....follow the yellow brick road..." ensued. Naturally.
Also some heel clicking. All things to be expected.

Sunday morning Charlotte wanted to watch it again. The weather was terrible, we had nothing better to do and cuddling up on the couch sounded perfect. She insisted on laying next to Grace so she could explain what was happening.

For the record, Wizard of Oz was a welcome break from Disney princesses.

If I had to make a list of the things that I miss the most. The things that I crave from itty bitty babies....this would rank in the top three. This position. Head resting on my thighs with her feet running up my belly and sprawled out over my chest. Her fingers woven loosely together over her belly as it moves up and down. Up and down. I can feel her breathing. I can see her smile in her sleep. I can marvel at how perfectly she fits here.

It's the perfect view.

And just like when Charlotte outgrew it....I'll sure miss it when it's gone. Not too long from now.

Muffins with Dada on Saturday.
Banana Bread with Mama on Sunday.
Good stuff.

Charlotte's skills as sous chef leave some room for improvement in the measuring/pouring/ingredient gathering/recipe following areas....but she's got the taste testing part down.
Pretty much the only reason she enjoys "cooking" is the sampling.

Semi-related cooking quote:
(as we were getting lunch ready Troy had shredded some cheese)
Charlotte: Hey! Who cut the cheese? Dada did you cut the cheese?
Dada: (laughing) I think Mama cut the cheese.

Kids are amazing.
